Singapore's oldest film society

For the love of film, since 1958.

Singapore Film Society is a non-profit born from a simple idea: that everyone deserves access to the world's most meaningful cinema. Sixty-eight years on, that's still the only thing that drives us.

We believe film has the unparalleled power to educate and unite people from every background — and that everyone should have the platform to share their voice.

We're the largest organiser of film festivals in Singapore, working with theatrical distributors, diplomatic missions, and academic and cultural institutions to bring the best of international cinema home.

We're renowned for avant-garde programming and over six decades of experience in film events, festival management and marketing. Film is our favourite medium — and it can be yours too.

What drives us

Three goals, one passion

Everything we do comes back to these.

👁️

Watch & Appreciate

We want more people to enjoy films that aren't readily available in Singapore — the rare, the bold, the unforgettable.

✏️

Educate & Create

Film has the power to spread important messages. It's an influential medium, and we want to employ it for good.

❤️

Grow the Community

We want to spread the love for film as a tool for education, relaxation and bonding — bringing people together.

Our story

68 years, one running thread

We're the society for film-lovers who want exclusive access to the rare and the unforgettable — and the community that grows around every screening.

For nearly seven decades we've fought to bring films to Singapore that would otherwise never arrive: screening uncuts and standing beside filmmakers from our shores and around the world. We don't just show films. We make sure they're seen.

1954 17 October
The first meeting

At 6.30pm on a Sunday, the Singapore Film Society met for the first time on record — at the British Council Hall, Stamford Road.

1954 14 November
Our first ever screening

The Blue Angel (1930) was our very first screening. We had to turn away over 100 people due to the overwhelming attendance.

Fact #1
Older than we look

SFS began informally in 1948. After years of financial difficulty and secret 16mm screenings in members' homes, we disbanded — and 1954 became our comeback year.

1960s –70s
Building a community

We grew a strong community of cinephiles and kicked regular screenings of exceptional films into motion — the genesis of our embassy collaborations and long-running festivals.

1983
Japanese Film Festival

The Embassy of Japan approached us to co-organise their festival — one of our biggest to date. Today, SFS is the constant guiding hand for embassies and rotating diplomats.

1984
British Film Festival

For two decades, we co-organised this festival with the British Council, marking a happy acceptance of British films into mainstream cinema.

1986
French Film Festival

Alliance Française first brought us on board. Today it's one of the biggest festivals in Singapore — a testament to film's role in teaching culture and language.

1987
Lifting the ban

We successfully appealed to lift the ban on Chen Kaige's Yellow Earth (1984), and were the only ones to screen it. SFS became known for exclusive access to banned, controversial and rare films.

1988
Italian Film Festival

SFS became a trusted partner to the Italian Embassy, assisting with even bigger festivals every single year — right up to today.

1996
A starry night

We held a memorable screening of Ajin: The Story of a Stuntwoman , with Oscar-winning Everything Everywhere All At Once star Michelle Yeoh in attendance.

1997
Uncut and uncompromised

Despite the aversion surrounding Trainspotting (1996), SFS screened a completely uncut version. Everyone else in Singapore watched a version with four cuts.

2013
Singapore Chinese Film Festival

In partnership with the Singapore University of Social Sciences, we launched what is now the second-largest film festival in Singapore and our largest annual event.

2016
MINDS Film Festival

In collaboration with the Movement for the Intellectually Disabled of Singapore, this festival uses film to build a more inclusive community for our differently-abled peers.

2018 60 years
Six decades of SFS

We celebrated our 60th with a screening of Shirkers (2018) by Sandi Tan, and wrote our history into an exhibition at Capitol Theatre — attended by DPM Heng Swee Keat, once a member himself.

2018 Roma
Roma, with Cuarón

In collaboration with Netflix, we organised a theatrical screening of Roma — with director Alfonso Cuarón flying in for a Q&A, moderated by Boo Junfeng.

2021
Through the pandemic

When events shut down, we pivoted to online watch parties, Zoom Q&As and masterclasses — building a whole new community of film-lovers, many of whom are now family.

2024 –25
A full year of festivals

Our calendar stayed full — the Singapore Chinese, European Union, Italian, Japanese and many more festivals, a steady stream of meaningful cinema all year round.

2026 1 January
SFS Somerset
A home of our own

We opened SFS Somerset — a 66-seat cinema in Hall 6 of Golden Village Cineleisure, taking over the space left by The Projector to keep independent and Singapore films alive in the heart of Orchard.

Every week's line-up is curated by our chairman, Kenneth Tan, who made one promise: "I will not turn any away."

Today
68 years of film

The running thread has never changed: a deep, stubborn passion for film. Today we're the #1 partner for film events in Singapore — with a year-round festival calendar and a permanent weekly home at SFS Somerset.

Join us. All you need is to love watching films — any films.

Film is our favourite medium.
It can be yours too.

Join from $10+ a month for discounted tickets to every screening, plus free monthly films and festival perks.

THE SOCIETY

About Singapore Film Society

Singapore Film Society (SFS) is a non-profit organisation that was started over 60 years ago by a group of cinephiles who felt the need to diversify the films that were brought to Singapore's shores.

Who We Are

Today, we are the #1 partner for film events in Singapore.

Our Mission

We believe that films have the unparalleled potential to educate and unite people from all backgrounds.

We envision a society where everyone has equal exposure to meaningful and essential films, and the platform to share their voices and opinions.

We aim to promote film appreciation as art and entertainment, and to bridge the gap between art-house cinema and the commercial film industry.

Our Family

Six decades in, we're powered by a team as diverse in attitude as it is skilled in craft.
